GATE CE 2027 Exam Pattern & Preparation Guide
How the GATE CE (Civil Engineering) paper is structured and marked, and how to use previous year papers to prepare for it.
Exam pattern
Every GATE CE paper has 65 questions for 100 marks, in 3 hours:
- General Aptitude: 5 1-mark questions + 5 2-mark questions = 15 marks
- Core Subject: 25 1-mark questions + 30 2-mark questions = 85 marks
Questions are Multiple Choice (MCQ, one correct option), Multiple Select (MSQ, one or more correct options) or Numerical Answer Type (NAT, a typed number within an accepted range) — mixed across both sections.
Marking scheme and negative marking
A correct MCQ or MSQ earns its full marks; MSQ gives no partial credit for picking only some of the correct options. A wrong MCQ answer costs one third of the question's marks — 1/3 for a 1-mark question, 2/3 for a 2-mark question. MSQ and NAT have no negative marking at all, so an educated guess there costs nothing if wrong.
Subjects tested
General Aptitude is common to every GATE paper. The core-subject section for GATE CE covers:
- Engineering Mathematics
- Engineering Mechanics
- Solid Mechanics
- Structural Analysis
- Construction Materials and Management
- RCC Structures
- Design of Steel Structures
- Geotechnical Engineering
- Fluid Mechanics and Hydraulics
- Engineering Hydrology
- Irrigation Engineering
- Environmental Engineering
- Transportation Engineering
- Geomatics Engineering
Each subject page above lists its full syllabus — every topic — and how many previous year questions we have for it.
How to use previous year papers
- Start with subject-wise practice on your weakest subjects before attempting a full paper, so a bad section doesn't hide how you're doing everywhere else.
- Sit at least a few full papers under real timing, with negative marking on, so exam-day pressure and pacing aren't new on the day.
- Read the explanation for every question you get wrong, not just the ones you got right by luck — the pattern in your mistakes is more useful than the score.
- Revisit a subject's practice set a second time a few weeks later; recognising a question is not the same as being able to solve it cold.
