GATE ECE 2027 Exam Pattern & Preparation Guide

How the GATE ECE (Electronics and Communication Engineering) paper is structured and marked, and how to use previous year papers to prepare for it.

Exam pattern

Every GATE ECE paper has 65 questions for 100 marks, in 3 hours:

Questions are Multiple Choice (MCQ, one correct option), Multiple Select (MSQ, one or more correct options) or Numerical Answer Type (NAT, a typed number within an accepted range) — mixed across both sections.

Marking scheme and negative marking

A correct MCQ or MSQ earns its full marks; MSQ gives no partial credit for picking only some of the correct options. A wrong MCQ answer costs one third of the question's marks — 1/3 for a 1-mark question, 2/3 for a 2-mark question. MSQ and NAT have no negative marking at all, so an educated guess there costs nothing if wrong.

Subjects tested
